Homes to Inspire | The 'Grand Dame' in Greece

In 2007, the architecture practice ASKarchitects co-founded by the Greek architect Stella Konstantinidis, was hired to renovate this landmark private residence in Piraeus, Greece. Their brief? Create an open plan, modern space to house a family of four with a new penthouse extension. The result? An exquisite four storey home with many amazing layers. All interior walls were removed and replaced with sliding doors and walls for flexible living. The most flexible feature would have to be the timeless, old-world courtyard complete with over scaled glazed doors giving the sense of endless height. As the architect herself puts it ‘this courtyard area has become the lungs of the house’.

I love how the original architectural elements have been taken into consideration, evident in the stonework, staircase, courtyard, 19th century walls and upper floor leading to the new contemporary extension. It is this mix of old and new, which combines a classic Greek style with chic modernism that works so well. The impeccable interior design caters to adults and kids alike and just looking at all that designer furniture makes me swoon!
