Plate Walls

Displaying decorative plates on the wall is certainly not a new idea, but rather a classic design concept that seems to be popping up a lot lately. Judging by some of the creative displays we're seeing, it's not surprising. Beautiful graphic plates, whether vintage or modern can provide a fun alternative to wall art, and the effect can be really striking.

The key to getting this look right is to carefully plan how you want the plates to be displayed. Play around with different layouts on the floor first, and if you are using several plates trace around them onto paper and place them on the wall to get an idea of how they will look. There's lots of different options depending on how many plates you are using and the sizes of them. Symmetrical patterns work well with an even number and mismatched sets can be worked in many different ways. Don't be afraid to mix vintage plates with new ones or add to the display as your collection grows.

I've picked out some of my favourite finds from around the Internet to share with you. Having inherited some family china that's been packed away for some time now, I've been completely inspired by some of the vintage plate walls. Which ones do you like?

For a structured look, hang your plates vertically, horizontally or even in a circle.

Play around with different configurations. Dark walls or graphic wallpaper will really make the plates stand out.

These really caught my eye. For something different hang your plates with bows or add some pom poms like these neon ones. How fun is that?

Mix it up by using mismatched plates or stick to one colour palette.

Like the look of these pretty plates? Well, look again. This is actually wallpaper! A clever alternative to the real thing and inspired by porcelain gems sourced from china cabinets and antique markets, Studio Ditte's 'Porcelain' wallpaper features stacks of gorgeous saucers.

The Clock Plate Clock by Young & Battaglia for Mineheart features images of vintage clocks printed onto glazed porcelain dinner plates. Available in three sizes, they can be hung solo or as a set to create a fun and quirky wall feature. 'Each clock is inspired by a different capital city and are appropriately named London, Paris and New York to show different time zones if desired.' So there you go, they look great and they're practical!

Seen something here that you like? Why not give it a try... I'd love to hear how you go!
